But Maybe MacBook Air wasn`t necessary one...
3.0 pounds instead stock 4.5 pounds for MacBook Pro 13.3 inches.... I don`t know.
And price. For 1.5 pounds you pay extra $300 minimum minus Processor Speed, RAM, Video Card and all, all, all.

It is so portable that I end up bringing it anywhere I go. I am a college student and I bring my laptop everyday for notes, etc. Regarding to the battery, however, I am not as lucky as you say you do. I get around 3 hours with lightwork. By light work, I mean MS Word + Firefox. I did drain the battery and other stuff though but I don't think I've reached the 4 hours battery life your claiming.

Re: MacBook Air, 2nd inning: HomeRun!

I would love an Air, unfortunately it's just not practical for me. I run my MBA against a 23' CD 8 hours a day and fire up VMs when I need them and I don't see it being a big performance penalty. What really limits you on the MBA is the amount of mem you can really live with while running your other OS X Apps. FYI, The rule of the thumb is that VMWare Fusion takes about 2x the amount of the memory your VM is allocated. So personally I have not gone beyond 512Mo on the VM. Running a 2-3 Go swap file on the MBA is no problem btw if you have the SSD version, things are fast. So my recommendation would be that if you need a full windows desktop within a VM to run pretty much all the time, I would probably want a machine that can take more RAM. If however you just need to fire VMs now and then for testing or specific purposes, then I think you will be pleased with the MBA. Good luck!

Re: MacBook Air, 2nd inning: HomeRun!

Hi Sébastien,

I'd love to hear more about your experience using VM with the MBA. I will spend time heavily in Windows for work and wonder, particularly if I'm using an external monitor and the integrated graphics are already sucking up some RAM, whether it will be able to cope with a bunch of VM apps running concurrently - think Outlook, OneNote and PowerPoint - without overheating or slowing terribly.

All the best,

The things I like the most are the battery life which at 4 hours beats most notebooks. Say I do not have a power supply, in 4 hours I can do a lot and them move to somewhere else. The keyboard and touchpad are excellent and make using this notebook a real pleasure. Price has come down a lot, I paid $1800 for mine. It is a worthy version finally. Camino has still has its appeal though, even if the lack of plugins/extensions don't make it as attractive anymore. FF is really getting slower though, after each update, but it has very powerful extensions for developing/debugging. All in all, they all have their fair place in my heart ;)

Re: MacBook Air, 2nd inning: HomeRun!

I agree, (at the risk of sounding like an Apple fanboy (or fangirl) it makes sense to use Apple software as much as possible. It has gone done now for me as well (more around 3:20), after a 100 drain/charges. You might want to watch what processes are running in the background. The only noticeable things I am not running are Spotlight & Dashboard. Also, FF is known to generate more CPU usage than Safari, but not to the level you are reporting. We can only hope that the next battery in the MBA will be adaptive like the one in the new 17' ;)

Re: MacBook Air, 2nd inning: HomeRun!

I just got my new MBA as well last December. and I love it!. I am very surprised at how snappy it is. I don't think I can ever go back to another laptop that will be heavier than MBA. You get spoiled when it almost feel nothing carrying this around. I like my Macbook Pro's keyboard though; MBA's seems to require more pressure.
